Sleeping Tips for Summer

After the past few hot and humid summer nights, if you don’t already have air conditioning, I’m sure you are now seriously considering it! While it can be nice to walk into an air-conditioned room and feel as though you have travelled to a different season or climate all together, you might want to consider trying some of these tricks we found on wikihow before you run out to make a hefty investment.

  1. Put a bag of ice cubes into a shallow container in front of a fan. Point the fan towards you in your bed. As the moving air from the fan heads toward you the coolness from the ice should chill the even more to “mimic air conditioning”.
  2. Place a cool damp facecloth on your forehead while lying in bed. If it gets warm, flip it over.
  3. Place your bed linens in bags in your freezer all day and make your bed right before its time to go to sleep.
  4. Make a Rice Sock and place it in the freezer and leave it there for at least two hours. When you turn in, bring the bag with you to use as a cool compress. Try placing it under your pillow so it’s nice and cool when you flip it over.”
  5. If you live in a home with multiple stories, sleeping downstairs will be cooler since warm air rises.
  6. Try to lower your body temperature by rinsing your wrists under cold water for about a minute, splash cold water on your face or even take a cold shower before calling it a night.

There are few things worse than the discomfort that comes with not being able to fall asleep because of the heat and humidity of a breezeless, midsummer’s night. Try some of these tips to see if you can catch some shut-eye and let us know what works for you!

Amherst Earth Day 2010

What is the significance of April 22nd? If someone were to ask me that question, I would probably say, “I don’t know”.  Well, April 22nd is Earth Day! It’s a day to celebrate becoming environmentally-conscious for the sake of our big, blue planet. There are usually speeches, meetings, and seminars, all open to the public, to discuss how to make Earth a better place to live. I’ve gathered up a couple of simple ways to do your part to keep our planet looking as beautiful as possible.

Try to Reuse and Recycle - Set out cans and bottles for neighborhood pickup; when you drink bottled water, reuse the bottle before recycling it; choose rechargeable batteries and then recycle them when they die.

Improve the Outdoors – Use those outdoor trash cans and never litter; Plant a deciduous (leafy) tree—trees help clean the air we breathe by producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide.

Many cities and towns in Massachusetts hold events during the week of the 22nd, so be sure to check local town websites to find out more.  Remember the best way to celebrate Earth Day is to tell everyone you know to get involved and to do something that will help make a difference!

Here at Encharter Insurance, we are proud Earth Day supporters and we are doing our part to make a difference.  We have a paperless option for our valued clients.  All you have to do is fill out a form and we’ll digitize all of your monthly statements and policy requests.  There should be no need to see another piece of paper from us again!
